Dee Why Modern Sandstone & Render

Natural sandstone paving with crisp white rendered boundary retaining walls and lush architectural foliage.

Some of the most effective gardens are built on a single contrast. In Dee Why, that contrast is pale render against natural sandstone, two finishes that sharpen each other, held together with structured planting.

Natural sandstone paving forms the main ground plane, its warm, irregular tones giving the space movement underfoot. Against it, the boundary retaining walls are rendered in a crisp white finish, a clean, flat surface that frames the stone rather than competing with it. The walls hold the garden levels while reading more like architecture than infrastructure. Architectural foliage was then planted through the beds, its layered forms softening the junction between the horizontal paving and the vertical wall planes, and giving the garden depth as the planting establishes.

Materials & Finishes Used

  • Natural sandstone paving
  • White rendered retaining walls
  • Architectural planting

The finished garden balances two textures, pale render against natural stone, with planting softening the hard lines. The result is a modern, ordered outdoor space that still reads warm and lived in rather than stark.
